Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, met with Annette Weber, the European Union’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, on Tuesday to talk about ways to improve security and stability in the region. They discussed the importance of Egypt and the EU working closely together on issues affecting the Horn of Africa.
During the meeting, Abdelatty stressed how important Egypt’s partnership with the EU is for achieving long-term security and stability in the region. He confirmed Egypt’s commitment to peaceful solutions and resolving conflicts through continued dialogue and cooperation.
“Egypt sees strengthening relationships with regional countries as a key part of both regional and continental security,” Abdelatty said.
He also highlighted the need for more international and regional efforts to tackle security challenges in the region, such as terrorism and extremism. He explained that Egypt is working on diplomatic efforts to help resolve disputes and bring stability to the Horn of Africa.
On Sudan, Abdelatty welcomed Weber’s recent visit to Port Sudan and asked for her thoughts on the current situation. He emphasized the importance of respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, as well as protecting the country’s resources and institutions.
Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for international and regional efforts to end the conflict and achieve a political resolution. He discussed Egypt’s coordination with international stakeholders and Sudanese political groups to help resolve the conflict, establish a ceasefire, and deliver humanitarian aid.
The two also discussed other security and political issues in the region. Abdelatty stressed the importance of supporting Somalia’s stability and respecting its sovereignty. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to helping Somali institutions.
The meeting also covered the rising security challenges in the Red Sea. Abdelatty said there is a need for more cooperation among Red Sea and Gulf of Aden countries to protect international shipping lanes.
He stated that the security of the Red Sea is a key priority for Egypt and that any threat to its security could affect the global economy.
Weber thanked Egypt for its active role in addressing African issues. She praised Egypt’s focus on Red Sea security and the region’s stability. She also expressed her hope for stronger cooperation with Egypt in efforts to support peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
