Somali President Shocks AU During Chairperson Election

The African Union (AU) held its chairperson election on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Many leaders attended the important event. The election was expected to be smooth, but a surprising moment changed everything. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud played a key role in the outcome. His actions shocked many leaders in the AU.

Before the election, many people believed a different candidate would win. However, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Yousef won the election. This was unexpected for many. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud worked behind the scenes to ensure this victory. His efforts paid off, and Djibouti secured the AU Chairperson position for the next four years.

President Mohamud used his diplomatic skills to gain support. He met with different leaders and convinced them to vote for Mohamed Ali Yousef. He built strong alliances with key nations in Africa. His strategy helped change the direction of the election.

During the election process, many leaders did not expect Djibouti to win. However, President Mohamud had a well-planned approach. He knew which countries to engage with. He focused on regional cooperation and mutual interests. His negotiations made a huge difference.

When the election results were announced, many leaders were surprised. They did not expect Mohamed Ali Yousef to win. President Hassan’s efforts were not widely known before the election. His political strategy was effective but quiet. This made the final result shocking for many AU members.

Some leaders expected the chairperson to come from Kenya. However, Djibouti’s victory showed that smaller nations can also lead. President Hassan proved that strong diplomacy and planning can change expectations.

Mohamed Ali Yousef’s win is significant for Djibouti. It gives the country more influence in the AU. Somalia’s role in the election shows how strategic President Mohamud is. His leadership is now seen as strong and diplomatic.

Other African nations will now pay more attention to Somalia. The country will have a voice in major AU decisions. This is a great opportunity for Somalia to improve its position in Africa.

Different leaders reacted in different ways. Some praised President Hassan for his political skills. They said his diplomacy was impressive. Others were surprised and did not expect this result.

Many leaders congratulated Mohamed Ali Yousef. They promised to work with him. Some leaders were not happy because they supported other candidates. However, the election process was fair, and Djibouti won in a democratic way.

Somalia’s involvement in the AU election will bring new opportunities. The country can now influence policies in Africa. President Mohamud’s success shows that Somalia is ready to play a bigger role in African politics.

Mohamed Ali Yousef’s leadership will be closely watched. He will have to work hard to unite African nations. Somalia’s influence in the AU will now be more important than ever before.
